The BTL Cryotherapy system is an effective tool for clinics looking for effective treatment of painful inflammation, moving beyond messy ice and cold packs. Safety and patient comfort are always at the forefront of the BTL design, and the Cryotherapy system is no different. Capable of reaching -32C, the BTL system can provide continuous, and 3 pulsed modes for a comfortable treatment, limiting the risk of overloading the tissue.

For busy clinics that prefer a hands-free modality, the cryotherapy system can be paired with optional sleeves. The sleeves can fully encompass a treatment area, providing both cold therapy and light compression for increased benefit.

Intelligent Design features are incorporated to make the use and care of the system very simple. Preset programs are built in for fast treatment setup, and each program can be edited to match your patients’ exact needs. The screen also guides clinics through care cycles, including the proprietary Drying System, to ensure the longevity of the cryotherapy system.

Mechanism of action

The cold provided by the BTL Cryotherapy system is effective at blocking the pain perception. As well, during treatment the treatment area will experience increased muscle tone and vasoconstriction, followed by vasodilation and relaxation. This effect, combined with the gentle compression, accelerates blood and lymphatic flow, as well as suppressing the inflammatory response.

Clinics that can benefit from Cryotherapy:

  • Physiotherapy clinics: treating muscle spasms or inflammatory conditions becomes simple and low cost with the hands-free sleeve system
  • Sports clinics: Athletes expect fast return to field and love the targeted cryotherapy for effective treatment of sports injuries
  • Orthopedic clinics: Ideal for post-surgical conditions and swelling, especially with light compression.

FAQ

Cryotherapy can be used to treat many painful conditions, such as inflammatory conditions and reheumatic diseases. It is also extremely effective in the treatment of acute injury, such as a sports injury or “sprain”. Post-surgery conditions and frustrating muscle spasms can also benefit from cryotherapy. Finally, patients with multiple sclerosis or stroke related hemiplegia can find some relief with cold therapy.

Cryotherapy is fairly new to many clinicians in Canada, but clinics have used ice packs and RICE therapy for years. The BTL Cryotherapy helps clinics move past messy ice bags and gel packs that can break. Extremely popular in Europe, cryotherapy is found in physiotherapy or other orthopedic clinics. Rehab centres and those that specialize in sports medicine are also very aware of cryotherapy. Finally, there are some orthopedics or cosmetic clinics that use cryotherapy.

Some patients can’t have cryotherapy, due to other medical conditions. The list of contraindications include: Cold hypersensitivity, Cryoglobulinemic disease, Open wounds, Paroxysmal cold meoglobinuria, Raynaud’s syndrome, Sensation disorders, Application over regenerating peripheral nerves, Application over an area with peripheral vascular disease.

Both OrthoCanada and BTL recognize that training is the key to adding a new modality to your clinic. We include virtual training with our National Trainer with every unit. Our trainer uses the cryotherapy system in his clinic routinely, and will be able to train or discuss the application with you.

Treatment times can vary based on the protocol that is chosen, the application method (dynamic or hands free), and the patients response to the therapy.

The BTL Cryotherapy system presets are fully adjustable and controllable, so you can adjust the level of cold that the patient experiences, to provide a comfortable and effective treatment.

There are no consumables required with the BTL cryotherapy systems, so additional costs would be limited to expanding your sleeve inventory or adding additional nozzles.

The BTL Cryotherapy has built in reminders about the care and maintenance of the system. Generally, the daily maintenance is simply running the protocols or emptying a water reservoir. The sleeves can easily be cleaned with Biotext.

All BTL systems are built directly by BTL in the EU. Specifically, BTL’s largest manufacturing site is in Prague. BTL manufactures all of their own products, holding special patents and operates on 5 continents in over 90 countries.
